Understanding Our Community Through Data
We can't fix what we don't measure. Our surveys and research help us understand who's in the Python community, who's missing, and what barriers exist.
Why Research Matters
Feelings and assumptions aren't enough. To make real progress on diversity and inclusion, we need data.
- Who actually makes up the Python community today?
- Which groups are underrepresented—and why?
- What barriers prevent people from participating?
- Are our efforts making a difference over time?
Research gives us honest answers to these questions, even when those answers are uncomfortable.
Our Approach
Community Surveys
We design and conduct surveys to understand the experiences of Python community members, with special attention to underrepresented groups and regions.
Analysis of Existing Data
We analyze data from the annual Python Developer Survey and other sources to track diversity trends over time.
Regional Deep Dives
Some questions require focused attention. We conduct targeted research on specific regions or communities to understand their unique contexts.
Transparent Reporting
We publish what we learn—including findings that show where we're falling short. Transparency builds trust and accountability.
Key Findings
Asia-Pacific Survey (2023)
Our survey of Python community members in Asia and the Pacific revealed important gaps:
These findings directly influenced PSF outreach strategies and contributed to the founding of the Python Asia Organization.
Grants Distribution Analysis
By tracking where PSF grants go, we documented significant regional imbalances—and advocated for change. The result: Asia's share of grants grew from 2% to 15% in one year.
Current Status
We're currently working on:
- Analyzing recent Python Developer Survey demographic data
- Planning the next community feedback survey
- Documenting methodology for future research

Take Our Surveys
When we launch new surveys, we'll announce them through PSF channels. Your responses—especially if you're from an underrepresented group or region—help us understand the full picture.
